What does the Bible say about the words we speak?

If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. (James 1:26—NIV)
God highly values the words He has used to communicate with mankind. He Himself cannot lie and has revealed Himself as the One Who is "the Way, the Truth, and the Life." It would be logically consistent and completely understandable that He would require verbal self-control on the part of those He has created.
It is also fascinating that He would grade the eternal significance and value of our religious exercises. Often our own sense of well-being arises from priding ourselves in being a church-goer and, therefore, religious. If anyone can pass judgment on the success of your religious effectiveness God can. You probably wouldn’t take it kindly from anyone else. Your words matter.
Aren’t you glad you know God’s evaluation of you while there is yet time to change your ways?
